What is Culture?

Culture is a complex process of linking traditional knowledge with modern ways of life.  It is at the core of every individual, social, communal and national identity. It is a process of passing down knowledge, social norms and belief systems from generation to generation.

There are two components to culture:

Tangible – something that has a physical presence and can be touched. Tangible cultures have historical and archeological importance.   For example, temples, monuments, art,  crafts, cultural products, etc.

Intangible – something that cannot be touched but is felt.  For example, customs for marriage/birth/death, rituals, festivals, dances, songs, languages, religion, artisan skills etc.

Nepal – A Paradise of Culture

The foundation of Nepal’s cultural diversity is rooted in its extremely varied geography. From the ice-cold Himalayan mountains, to the lush Hill region, to the arid Terai – Nepalese have been adapting their lifestyles to suit the varied climate and landscape for centuries. The result is a rich and unique cultural heritage of over 100 ethnic groups, speaking more than 90 languages.

Despite the numerous differences in traditions, rituals, food, clothes, etc., unity is at the heart of Nepal’s culture.  Living side by side and coexisting peacefully, Nepalese respect each other’s differences, as well as share common traditions. This can be seen during Nepal’s festivals, which are national in nature, rather than confined to one particular group or community. For example, Dashain and Buddha Jayanti (the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha) are celebrated across the country.

Unity Amid Cultural Diversity

A recent shift in the political and social atmosphere in Nepal is awakening interest in the culture of ethnic groups. Many are happy to join in the celebrations and discover new traditions and festivals such as Lhosar, Ughyauli, Chaath, Deuda, Mha Puja, Maghi and Gai Jatra. Nepali’s multi-cultural heritage is an important part of their national identity.
